Scrap For Change

The Caribbean Oceanography Aquaculture and Subsea Technology (COAST) Foundation initiated the Scrap for Change (SFC) program in September 2019. The program was developed to reduce the amount of waste that ended up in landfills or polluting our ocean, while generating revenue to support the ongoing programs of the foundation.

Through the generous support of the Offshore Operators, Contractors and Service Providers in the region, we have been able to prove that the SFC model provides a ‘win-win’ situation for all stakeholders.  Disposal of industrial waste and surplus project material can often be a costly exercise for these companies.  Scrap for Change is a positive avenue to reduce operational or project costs while supporting a good cause.

How it Works

Our team of volunteers with varying professional backgrounds, work with the operations or project team of the donating company to determine the most efficient and environmentally safe means of recycling or repurposing the surplus material or waste. At COAST, we leverage our network of supporting professionals, facilities, agents and contractors to offer the donating parties drastically reduced pricing on services compared to market prices.  COAST can provide logistics and transportation for materials donated to the Scrap for Change Program.  Our team is also experienced in demobilization activities, deconstruction operations and rigging / lifting requirements.

Crane Wire Reel Recycling

The Normand Installer Offshore Construction Vessel recently replaced it’s 250Te Crane Wire.  Vessel owner, Solstad Offshore, faced massive expense to dispose of the 76Te old crane wire reel due to importation cost, berthing, crane rentals, transport, pilot and agent costs.

The COAST Foundations Scrap for Change team negotiated the offloading, transportation and recycling of the Crane Wire and Reel at NO COST to Solstad Offshore.  Furthermore, there were a surplus funds from the recycling process that allowed for COAST to host a luncheon at a restaurant in Chaguaramas for all the Normand Installer Crew, a welcomed break from their normal offshore work day.

Suction Pile De-Construction and Recycling

A Multi-National FPSO owner / operator engaged the COAST Foundation, through their agent, to De-Construct and Recycle a spare Suction Pile Anchor that was surplus from a recent installation campaign.

Through the Scrap for Change Program, the team of COAST Multi-Discipline specialists developed Procedures, Lift Plans, Safety Plans, Risk Assessments and Contractor Resource Schedules.

The Team project managed the execution, overseeing on site contractor performance and HSE deliverables.  COAST provided facility approved personnel and transportation services for the relocation of materials to an off-site recycling facility.

In total, the Team recycled one (1) 165Te Suction Pile, 32 x 2.5Te Pile Saddles, 32 x Transportation Vent Covers and a 5.5Te Bottom Chain Section.  The operation was completed safely, below budget and earlier than scheduled.
